The pursuit of money!!!!

Ah ha! Money. Let's talk about money. So I was sitting still the other day, on monday I think, viewing my account statement for September and it struck me like lightening that the only inflow I had for the entire month was the salary inflow. The same happened in August.... no daddy deposit, no mummy deposit, no sugar/honey deposit, no friend or family deposit, no enemy deposits sef...and I literarily felt like crying. I used to have people just credit my account for no reason sometimes...they tell me to just take for fine-girl-up-keep. Now for two months no 'dash'. I couldn't risk checking July statement for fear that it's the same.

I began to think of other avenues to make money. This waking up 4pm because of work thingy isn't something I want to still be doing when I'm in my 40s nah...and I got thinking, and was thinking hard (yea I try to make sure I squeeze at least 30mins everyday to shut every noise and just think, one hour at most) and it hit me that I am not very business inclined. I am more of a structured environment/office kinda work girl. This is a worrisome thing to know because shouldn't we all aspire to have businesses on the side? The irritating question I get asked often when I wonder aloud about this is: 'JAY What do you like doing'?

Seriously? What sort of question is that... okay I like:

1. Eating
2. I like writing
3. I like the guy of the moment
4. I like fixing people's work issues
5. I like teaching/mentoring  (What I know though about work related stuff)
6. I like cake
7. I like driving
8. I like fast cars
9. I like gazing at fine men
10. I like gazing at fine ladies
11. I like organizing other people's life
12. I like helping people find solution to their issues

Mind you that list is in no particular order

But the question is how the heck am I supposed to start a business with any of these likes???  And then I get confused, and I stop thinking, and then I allow my mind wander away from my confused thoughts and turn them towards the 8am- 6pm job...that I get to the office at 6:15am for and get home by 9pm sometimes 10pm if the road is experiencing major traffic , and I thank God that I have a better job than the last job where they enjoy owing staff salary, and refuse to pay vendors too (May God forgive my ex employers)

But I don't know mehnnnnn.... I really need another source of income. I'm at that age where I need multiple streams of income.

Happy Belated Independence Day

Honesty will kill your prospects for that job

I like that saying: 'Honesty is my best policy', although recent revelations has taught me not to trust anyone who says that every time, because it just means he/she has a lot of other policies; good, bad, ugly, better and then the best policy. Nah....that's an untrustworthy person

Back to getting the job...or not. In my position as Human Resource officer I have conducted a handful of interviews and you will be amazed at just how silly some people can be in their attempt to keep every thing honest. Don't get me wrong I like everything laid out on the table, but in my opinion you lay your cards all out when you've got all the aces.

So what do I propose you do?

Fake it!!! Until you make it.

For instance I am currently trying to recruit for the position of HR/ADMIN officer, and if it were left to me alone, as a psychologist, I would pick the best fit for the job from among the candidates who have come in thus far. But its not up to me alone, because also seated during these interview sessions is the External HR Consultant and my COO....and my MD at the last stage. Yes ke...it is a very sensitive position.

My concern is this, those with all the ability to do the job well and learn and grow with the organization if selected, are the ones who decide that honesty is the way to go. No!!! your employer wants to know what you know about the role, what you have done in that position and how you will be of value in filling this vacant position in their organization. Yes its not your fault that the operations in your former company (for instance in HR/ADMIN) differ greatly from this new company, but it is not for you to point it out...eg:

''...well I didn't handle that part of human resources, we had a recruiter for that, and also we had a lady in charge of handling personnel benefits and rewards, training/development was at the discretion of management and they initiated it...what I do in my current company is personnel management, making sure the payroll bla bla bla and they come to work on time or initiate disciplinary action bla bla''

That's the point, you don't have to be painfully honest!!! because if thats your response above, you therefore don't know shit  very much about the job!!! Yes your former job may not have allowed you the luxury of beings fully hands-on on majority of all that make up Human Resource Management, but since you know you can do it if given the chance, it is your responsibility to do a 3 hour crash course with whoever can help you, study what it takes to do the job, pray for direction and then go and call the bluff of the interviewer.

''...part of my job description includes recruitment, where by it is my responsibility to match suitable personnel for any vacant position in the organization, personnel training and development are also key areas in my function and this I do side by side with management by identifying areas where staff can be trained to better improve on their job to give them a competitive edge... I also am in charge of payroll administration and I do this together with the financial manager to ensure that tax, pension, loans and any other deductions are properly done. I have an assistant who is in charge of  health insurance for staff as well as the other insurances, I oversee his work etc etc etc'

Now note... these are some of the functions of Human Resource Management, you can subtly leave out Strategy planning and all those other harder stuff, but come on don't tell us you were not hands on the common areas of the job and you expect we would say 'no problem, thanks for your honesty, you got the job' no be so ooo.

Every employer as much as possible want to know that you are coming in to add value, if they have to train you on the common aspects of the job, then they might as well train someone already within the organization. Your prospective employer need to have confidence in your ability to do the job even better than the last person did.

It is your job to know about the job functions of the title you bear (Mechanical Engineer, Chemical Engineer, HR professional, Business Development Manager etc)....so talk your title. Whether or not you were responsible for every aspect of the job in your former place is of no consequence to your new employer... TALK EVERY ASPECT...when you get in, you will learn the practical. Talk your way in first

I don't think that is being dishonest. Do you?

Understanding Office Politics

Fact: Not everyone will enjoy their work life experience. No matter how good the job is.

Job satisfaction does not come as a result of your remuneration or benefits (or lack of it) or from performance incentives only. Satisfaction from the job can be gotten through the apt application of the fine art of this wonderful concept called OFFICE POLITICKING

Office Politics are the strategies that people play to gain advantage, personally or for a cause they support... it is a fact of life of every organization. Maybe because of the negative connotation attached to it is the reason new employees or pious people tend to shrug their shoulders and say 'Well I cant get into office poiltics, I'll just do my work and keep my head down'. News Flash: You are that employee who would find it very easy to be frustrated on the job.

Office politics is a game you play in order to get and do those things that are unwritten in the office policy, its the game you play to jump the lines and bureaucracies and even some unwritten due processes.... its a game played by 90% of the staff in an organization from the Managing Director to the COO to the office assistants. Ignoring it, or denying it or avoiding it is just tantamount to living in a fools paradise because  whether you acknowledge it or not, it is happening around and over you and if you are not careful you will be a victim of war...the casual observers get chewed and spat out first.

No organization has unlimited resources that can go round everyone equally, first is for you to know this and accept it that some people will get more than others, whether they deserve it or not is a matter of opinion...your opinion I mean. However to be amongst those who gets a fair share from the company, you need to know how to play the game of making the politics at your work place work for you.

Swim along.... or be eaten alive

Build Relationships
Before you rush head in into building relationships you must first identify the key players in the organization: Influencers, those in authority, the leader of the grapevine, the custodian of sensitive information etc. Identify those who one way or the other your relationship with them can help your growth in the organization, then build relationship with them. A phone call every now and then outside of office work wont kill you, a cocktail after office hours wont bankrupt you. Actively taking part in out of office activities with your colleague is how relationships are built. You have to build your visibility with the people who could be directly and/or indirectly responsible for your uprising or downfall in the office, cultivate these relationships based on trust and by being dependable.

Share Information
Note this, I am not asking you to gossip anyhow, that can breed mistrust... what i'm saying is that giving a colleague an information that can help them with their job, is an act that will put them in your debts. 'Normally I wouldn't tell you this, however I think this will be of use to you...' that's what i'm talking about. Not petty gossip on how your boss is a meanie or how Mr. A is stealing from the office

Conflict Management
Its bound to happen, don't take it personally...its business. Deal with the business issue that has caused the conflict and forget the rest. Don't return trash talk for trash talk...proving a point is at the long run a pointless exercise trust me. And on no account should you run to your boss to whine about your disagreement with another colleague, that's just you being a tale bearer or better yet, one who can't manage issues. That's bad dude. Except if you find out that your colleague is going to trash talk you to your boss, in which case you have to get to your boss first. But remember, the use of tact should come into play here: '...oh by the way, Austin and I behaved rather poorly today, hmmm let me tell you about it'

Please those who matter
It was Bill Cosby who said ''...I don't know the secret to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody'. You can't please everybody...so don't try. However you need to satisfy those that matter, its hard trust me...when you have these strong conviction of what is right, what is best practice and you want to stand up for your colleague against your boss... DON'T. Take a deep breath, count to 20, and choose pleasing your Boss over your colleague. Its a cold cold world.

....to be continued

An Effective Female Leader

On one hand you are female and biology has blessed you with unnecessary emotions, extreme passions, a kind heart and a tendency to be more subjective than objective (most times)

On the other hand you are a leader, and social science demands you to be objective, steadfast, not one who gets easily excited and a person who can make right decisions regardless of whose ox is gored (yours included). A person in charge of others and situation

How do you blend being a woman and a leader in a corporate organization? You don’t. You are either a woman or a leader. You can’t be both at the same time. That’s if you want to keep your sanity.

You cannot be a friend and an effective leader at the same time, you cannot be a mother to those you are in charge of and be in charge at the same time. You cannot aim to please everybody but still lead rightly at the same time. You cannot be reactive like a woman tends to be, instead you have to be proactive. You have to be flexible even when your will wants you to remain rigid on that subject. You need to be consistent even when your hormones are running here and there... you need to act like a man even as you think like a woman.

Being a successful female leader entails leaving the woman part of you at home, get the job done and go back home to her. You just can’t be effective being both a woman and a Leader at the same time.  I don't think nature meant it so...

Its lonely at the top

Special Announcement

I'm back on Blackberry. This week to be precise... Some of you might be wondering what's so special about that. Some of you even know why, but cannot remember...but those who read this blog and love me, like aunty Joxy and few others, they will remember why it's a special announcement.

Anyways for the new comers here that are curious to know... It's here.  For those that cannot remember, #godiswatchingyou

In another news... We need to pray. In everything we do, lets fear God and ask for direction. In your decision making, in your going out and coming in...in the paths you choose to thread, acknowledge God and ask for direction. And pray that he gives you a listening hear. So that when the direction comes, you don't wave it off nonchalantly.

One special prayer I want you to pray...which I am praying is:

'Father in heaven,  do not make me make the mistake that will truncate/ruin my Destiny'

Pray it seriously...it was laid in my heart tonight. Pray it

I love you

Work and other news

So I had an interview with a Chinese Phamaceutical company last week Wednesday. The role was for HR Manager. That's a step up in career path for me. And the pay is similar to what I earn in my company that has still refused to re-open till now.

After the interview when the manager i'm to replace asked if I wanted the job, hinting that I have to start by the end of this month... I humbly declined because  somewhere during the course of the interview she had mentioned that Saturday was also a work day...that was the deal breaker for me.

Two weeks ago working on Saturday wouldn't have been a problem, but that was before Unilag contacted me last week offering me admission for my masters program!!! Yaaaaaaay!! I'm going to have my Saturdays busy with schoolwork for the next 18 months that I ain't gonna be working on those days for anybody...thank you very much.  So thank God for me my people.

So for now I'm still working at home for half pay (what a drag) ...meanwhile did I mention my boyfriend owns a primary school? No? He bought it over from his father two years ago...and has been asking me for sometime now to run it for him as the School Adminstrator and build it academically to standard. It sounds like a good idea being paid and getting a percentage from the profits like he offered, having my own time, pursuing the education alongside and making a difference in that school. But I don't know mehnnn... I feel like doing this might be somehow ooo...him being in charge of my paycheck and knowing my whereabouts most times... I don't know if that's a good idea ooo. What do you guys think? Besides now that I'm trying to focus completely on HR, won't doing this be taking me back to Administration?

Meanwhile for all the food lovers here...let me show you a blog my friend Joxy showed me some days ago.  It's so cool... It's focused on Delta State's mouth watering dishes... Follow this link  http://cookingncleaning.blogspot.com/

That's all for now folks. I need your feedback on the work thingy...

On your marks... Get Set.... Job hunt

Like I told my cousin some days ago, a bored Jay is not a very normal Jay...  So I've decided to seriously begin hunting for job... Men can wait for now. The half pay I am currently receiving since EFCC closed my office, isn't doing much for me and all my plans I've made for this year and that my dear, is deflating my Morale seriously. I like making money... more than a lot of things. So my eye dey *shook* seriously

So I've decided to go full throttle and begin guerilla job hunting. To help me achieve this, I decided to go off Blackberry... I had planned on taking a break from Blackberry for sometime now, but there always seemed to be a reason to hang on and stay back... long story short on Tuesday after my BIS expired, I decided not to renew it...and subconsciously tagged my going back on BB on getting a job. That is, the day I get back into an office (new job or current job) is the day I get back on blackberry. That means I need to intensify my job search and prayers because I miss my groups and gossips and friends on Blackberry already that it breaks my heart... I sometimes don't know why I punish myself by deprivation most times. Is it normal?

In between hunting for jobs... I discovered some blogs that You all should check out... I promise you, you would enjoy chilling with these blogs:

1. http://verysmartbrothas.com/ : these guys are just the best.... They talk about everything and anything and get as much as 700 comments per post.

2.  http://darkdiva007.blogspot.com/  : this baby is just so funny in her almost confused state... She's new on blogger so show some love, remember when you just started blogging and needed morale support too, so go and support her...oh and  her posts are debate worthy too

3.  http://tlsplace.wordpress.com/ :  So I hardly go on wordpress right? But this blogger has got me stalking   this blog every Monday morning. I had to read from the very first post till date...  Most of you already know of 'Oyin Cleg' right? Eh en...this is the blog.

So now that I have most graciously given you very good reading materials (remember to thank me in your comments)... would you in turn be gracious enough to point me to the vacancies you know of in your offices and your father's offices, and your mother's office, or Fiancées' offices... or even your children's offices?

Send all the links for job vacancies related to Administration/HR and even Document Control to me at nuttyjennifer@gmail.com

...its a serious matter, I pray I dont have to go on AIT and NTA and announce that I'm looking for work... like I said, a bored Jay, isn't a very normal one.

Thanks for stopping by... lots of love from me to you....

Toodles.

God Forgive My Office oooo...

I prayed that prayer some days back. You know I lost my job late last year after the surgery I went for and the three months I spent recovering.

I got another one end of March this year (Thank God)... more responsibilities and better Job description

Now EFCC has listed us as top 20 companies to be arraigned in court for this fuel subsidy scam ...:(

So since last month we have been working at home for half pay... I don tire oooo

I get on my knees

I've asked God to forgive the office for the 1.3billion Naira thiefry (covers face in shame) they are being accused of...for my sake na. I dont know how to function outside a structured work environment.

Which kine local trouble be this???

Do you think God will forgive them for my sake? or is it asking too much?

Na wa... Na wa

Hello...I'm glad you stopped by and you are here reading this, i'm sure you can help me figure this out. So I sent an email to my company on the 27th of September. And it goes thus:

'Dear Sir,

I'll be leaving Delta State for Lagos first week of October and I plan to resume on Monday the 10th of October...I'm much better now, I'll use a walking aid but only for a few months as continual physiotherapy will correct my movement 100% .

I want to thank you very much for your patience and understanding during this period. I really appreciate it and God bless you.

See you soon

Nutty J.'
I sent it to the Operations manager, the financial controller (because they have been paying me since I left in May and courtsey demands, and my head of department)
The next day (28th September 2011) my HOD responded with:
'Hi Nutty,

Glad to hear you are getting better and would be coming back soon.

While looking forward to having you back, may I say …may the Lord keep you.

All the best!

Kind regards'

I arrived Lagos yesterday and today I went through my emails as usual before bed and found another email from my HOD sent today the 5th of October 2011 and it goes:

'Dear Nutty J,

The decision has been taken by management to terminate your employment with immediate effect.

Attached is a scan copy of the formal letter to that effect. Original/acknowledgement copy will be delivered to you at your present address by courier.

Please acknowledge receipt of this email and provide your current address by return email.

Wishing you the very best in your future endeavor.'

I just read it 5mins ago ie 10: 50pm... I haven't replied or acknowledged the email... probably cos I dont know how to reply or maybe I'm just pissed off. I could have stayed in Delta State and finished my physiotherapy where it is cheap instead of rushing down here back to Lagos, and making arrangements with a private Physiotherapist, or maybe I'm just too chicken to acknowledge receipt of the email tonight.

Anyways I wont think about it tonight... I'll think about it tomorrow. Tomorrow is another day.

Eating The Humble Pie

Mr. Hairy: …wait excuse me’ he said cutting me short ‘how many years have you been working’
Me: ‘Three years’ I replied wondering what the heck he was on about….
Mr. Hairy: ‘No wonder you don’t know how to talk, you use words anyhow, first of all you say you want me to sign your casual leave form? Who are you to say that…I’ve worked for 20 years…I’ve been the admin manager in a reputable telecoms company for 5yrs…if not for the fact that this office isn't properly structured I would have queried you for insubordination’’
Me:…I don’t understand…what should I have said na…it’s you that would sign it.
Mr. Hairy: come and force me to sign…listen pick your words carefully, I’m saying this for your own good. You should be requesting for approval. Which I wouldn’t give without you telling me why it’s so important for you to leave work for three days whereas….
Me: ‘I have to attend to some family issues like the note says’’ I chipped in calling him ‘aproko’ in my mind…he wants to poke nose into my affairs abi?
Mr. Hairy: ‘Don’t interrupt me when I’m speaking…take your letter and bring it back when you know how to present yourself properly….things would be done orderly in this office
I got up angrily, fuming..how dare him, I’ve been in this office since 2008, who is this uncircumcised philistine that won’t let God’s people go…after all I hardly am absent from work except genuinely sick. Who be this one when just resume work as supervisor last two months to yarn nonsense… someone we were still showing how the work is done around here? Lazy ass dude
Nutty I’m taking your yogurt ooo, hope you don’t mind’’ a colleague called out.
In fact I have a mind to go directly to the operations manager with this…my ulcer pain don dey rise for the matter. Who is this bloody dude that wants to turn our Oyibo office to Yoruba office when everything is ‘eh Sir, eh Ma’…jooh ooooo…what is bringing nonsense to the barracks?
Well that was Friday last week
Saturday came, every channel I turned to I heard about humility…flipping the channel became my new challenge during the weekend. I Decided to listen to radio and I hear Mike Okonkwo and his ‘There is power in the word of God’ talking about submitting to authority or something like that… lia lia..on monday I'm going over his head...I'd like to even tell them of all his incompetence and oppressive behaviour.
Sunday came I decided I would go to church…no need staying at home today listening to inspiration FM to hear T.D Jakes and Joel Osteen preach along that line too, prevention is better than cure…thankfully today was thanksgiving so there wont be long preaching in church…
Pastor : ‘No 3….Humility. The lord gives grace to the humble and resists the proud’.
I groaned, wara hell? What is everyone saying…I just needed someone to agree with me that the guy is a jerk…what have I done wrong? Sign something for me he wants me to grovel first? I should tell him the reason why I want to go? Saying ‘family issue’ isn't enough? I went home still vexing. Okay i wont go over his head...i will just tell him to shove it and I will take the three days off and tell them not to pay me for those days...what is his problem?
But after a while I thought about it….what will it profit me to remain on my high horse and then have God resist me? Yes he is a jerk…but he is my boss and on principle I should accommodate his excesses. Well I’ll be humble…Tuesday is still far…
INEC: The elections have been postponed till next Saturday…go to work on Monday oooo.
Damn!! I’ll have to swallow my pride sooner than I thought.

So with my tails tucked between my legs after lunch…seriously fighting the urge not to throw up, I said:
Mr. Hairy I’ve brought this again, to seek approval from you’’
Him: What did you say?
Me: I’ve brought this to seek approval from you ( trying hard not to grit my teeth)
Him: I asked you some questions on Friday, what have you come up with? He asked arrogantly
Me: I have no pending jobs that cannot be handled by my colleague in my absence or that cannot wait for me. The 2003-2004 backlogs, whilst being important isn't urgent. I’ve devised a means of getting them done on my return and they won’t be a problem.
Him: Now you are deciding what is urgent or not right? what is so urgent that you need to travel for?
Me: Mr. Hairy…it’s to attend to some family matter…I need to sort some things out
Him: 'Then leave it…when I’m ready I’ll take a look at it…' he said frowning
Me; Excuse me say…its Wednesday na…I have only tomorrow (Tuesday) left
Him: Will you force me to sign? I say leave it…
Me; Okay Sir…thank you Sir…
I felt like puking… humble pie has got my stomach turning since morning…I am still trying hard not to vomit…
….but then heaven is my goal. Maybe na so God want use take teach me humility.
I still feel sick in the stomach sha…
…bleh

Moral Lesson:

Your boss is your boss even if you know he is a royal pain in the arse. There isnt much you can do about it...especially in Nigeria.

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

One thing pissing me the hell off....

...right now is my Job.

I don tire....as in for real. I am grateful I have a job in Nigeria becos its hard getting a good paying job like this one these days. But this one is really beginning to irritate me.

I cant call it a job...its more like 'work'. I dont want to have to sleep with anyone to get ahead...I dont want to kiss arse to get ahead...I dont want to scheme and tear people down to get ahead...

I'd like to be promoted based on merits....but its taking a longer time and it hurts me to see those whose only professional skill rests in their bossom and "mouth"and rear end, getting ahead while those who just want to do the job to the best of their ability are treated like modern day slaves.

Monday starts and I pray earnestly for friday...I pray for 5pm each day.... I wake by 4am and i'm thinking 'let it rain...let the unions go on strike...let the office not open today'' Just so I have a reason not to go.

I know I should resign right? I mean if I'm praying for public holiday every week then I really shouldnt be in that office. But if you are in Nigeria you know its not as easy as that...there are bills to pay...there is a lifestlye to uphold. And I like money.....

What do I do? I cant think of any skills I have that could make me say ''oh yes imma work for myself'

But I'm just so tired and unhappy with this place. I mean this is where I spend 11 hours and more of my life span everyday....it drains me.... it gives me sleepless nights... it makes me wake up in the middle of the night looking for chocolates or anything sweet to sweeten the thoughts in my head

Chocolate+cake+middle of night+sleep= Fat
Coffee+morning+kitkat+afternooninoffice= Cranky

Fat+Cranky= No normal social life
No normal social life = Unhappy + No normal Boyfriend

Unhappy+ No normal boyfriend =

Heaven please send me someone to love.....

Office Haters

I just dont understand...I am so angry that I could actually break a bottle on someone, anyone's head....okay let me explain

My boss just called me to say that some one in the office told her yesterday that I'm online 24/7 doing un-official work like facebooking, chatting etc...and that I'm lounging on the job. See me see wahala, me I dont know when all this hating will stop. How do people just forget about their own lifes and make conscious dedicated effort to bad mouth and try to ruin others. First last year it was agreed amongst the staff that I was rude...I dont have regards for senior members of staff bla bla bla. And I was like, 'excuse me ma'am, officially rude or un-officially rude?' she just gave me one bad eye like that and I decided to shut up...but for real I'm officially not rude...I do my job, but un-officially i can understand that my not wanting to join in the cliques or make small talk and not reply to small talks could come across as being rude.

Lemme explain...my mind has a mind of its own I swear....I cant control it. So if i'm not working, it takes out time to ehmm...roam. Its either busy thinking about life issues and trying to solve them, or thinking of what next to read or write about...so most time my mind is occupied, and absent-minded...so when people at those times, try talking to me, especially matter when no concern me my mind would shut out the drone of their voices and continue with its own roaming.

Example:

Collegue: So what was she doing signing off those cheques, she doesnt think again or she has forgotten she needs approval?

(the only part i heard was 'so she doesnt think? approval, cheque')

Me: I didnt know you would ask me this....I would have asked her about her thinking faculties

OR

Collegue: who's that guy? what company does he represent...I havent seen him here before...hey answer me na

Me: I'm sorry what did u say? (honestly i didnt hear)

Collegue: I said who's that guy? what company does he represent

Me: Was that what u asked?

Collegue: Yes

Me: Sorry...what was the question again?

....enh eh, what kinda question is that? she just interupted my flow of thought and now wants me to check out somborri....the major question sef, is how would I know? I was put here to know strange people abi? Or they pay me now to answer question when no concern my work abi?

Anyway that was last year's complaint..She's rude. Now its that i'm always on FaceBook. Like what will I do to stop em hating on me...honestly I dont care what they say but I cant continue to let them say all these stuff, it could get to the wrong ears and trouble may start. And its a lie, for real...I'm only on FB before work starts...I get to my office like 6am sometimes, what will I be doing till 8am....work? and I blog sometimes when I know I should be on my 1 hour break.....like now that I need to vent.

Anyways life has taught me that people would talk, whether you do good or bad, people would always have something negative to say....so to hell with them.

Lemme log off...for now. Before bad people would talk again.
